September 2015

The most notable events this September were the opening of the Flight 93 Memorial Visitor Center and the kickoff of football season.

During one of West Virginia's home games, Brad Paisley made a surprise appearance and sang "Country Roads" before the national anthem. Unlucky for me, I had my first ever memory card corrupt on me during his performance. But thankfully, I carried an extra memory card by some miracle. Lesson learned: always prepare for a worst case scenario. Even today's innovative technology is still man made.

Craig Fallucco, the wine specialist at Westmoreland Mall State store, poses for a portrait inside the business' temperature controlled wine cellar on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015. Fallucco retired as sommelier at Rolling Rock about seven years ago when his mother was dying to care for her in Pittsburgh home. Eventually, he stumbled onto a part-time job at the East Liberty store and about three years ago came to Greensburg full time. Since then, wine sales have increased and Craig has developed a following including several local restaurants who have tapped him for their wine lists.

Pennsylvania state police cadets stand during a formal inspection on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015 at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in Hershey, Pa. There is a major recruiting pitch for new cadets to replace a large number of state police troopers who are retiring. Though the full complement of troopers is supposed to be over 4,600 statewide, the current number is down by more than 300 troopers and is continuing to decline. In addition, 50 percent of the remaining troopers are going to be eligible to retire over the next four years.

Cowboys in Fayette County

Beautiful evening light, cowboy hats, twang and mud, subliminally brought out my native Texan side as I too, with camera in hand, was having fun with the boys. This August, I was fortunate to shoot two rodeo assignments in Fayette County: the Fayette County Fair and the Bullskin Township Fair. The guys were gentlemen to attendees, yet cursed, taunted and spit at their bull foes. Personally, I didn't have much interest in shooting the actual riding because the scenes beside the sport itself were so brilliant. That is what I love most about sports photography: the story around the game.

July 2015

This year marked my third consecutive Latrobe Fourth of July parade which is always a challenge to make different every year, as stated in my June blog. But red, white and blue flags, balloons, hats and floats always create for compositional fun.

July also showcased a fireman's carnival, farmer's markets and other summertime features as well as the midpoint of our intern Alexandria Polanosky's time with our staff. Personally, I was fortunate to have another young woman on our team to share anecdotes about sexism and unwanted advances while working in the field.

Not only is she a great listener and friend, she took the time to help me get to and from a rental car shop to ease an insurance claim. Ironically, my parked car was hit by a fireman's truck in a parking lot at a fireman's convention on my way to cover a fire (the first frame shown below was quickly photographed while standing on a fire truck before learning of my severely dented car caused by a fire chief and racing to the far-away fire). What are the chances! Only in a journalism career...

June 2015

Tears of joy and defeat filled my June as the sports season came to an end for the summer. I also shot my third Westmoreland County Air Show, which was a challenge for me this year. I guess that is part of the newspaper grind: finding creative ways to freshly shoot an event you have photographed previously. I am certain it will be more difficult with more experience I gain, but these repeating assignments will serve as an opportunity to improve myself consistently.

May 2015

This month wrapped up district softball and baseball, which provided for some compelling emotion, as well as a trip east with my boss Barry to state track. Reaction photos are my absolute favorite so I always get extremely excited when these all-or-nothing games are assigned to me. Here are my best few of the month, including some news assignments.

April 2015

April marked the full swing of spring sports and opening day of trout season, which is a huge deal around Western Pennsylvania. I made a photo page (three photos of my series are shown below) and wrote a short story about the unofficial holiday, "Fishmas Eve."

Here it is:

---

The further the sun set, the brighter the bonfires glowed along the soggy banks of the babbling stream. Grease dripped from kielbasa sticks as the comforting smell wafted over the water. And bedtime prayers to the “fish gods” were anxiously lifted.

‘Twas the night before "Fishmas" as New Kensington native Mike Patton Jr. of Connecticut toasted his reunion with his two brothers and father near Sleepy Hollow along Loyalhanna Creek.

Fittingly, Patton’s Pennsylvania homecoming from five military tours of duty as a pilot was greeted with a fat cigar and a cooler loaded five cans deep with Rolling Rock, the only beer the four drink on opening weekend of trout season a few miles from the famed country club.

For most of the last 45 years, Patton’s father Mike Patton Sr. has been camping the night before opening day in an annual tradition that locals refer to as "Fishmas Eve."

Foggy fishers and skies welcomed the 8 a.m. Saturday start as lures plunged and tempted rainbow, brown, brook and golden trout.

“Woohoo!” A hefty cheer belted upstream from Mike Kozain of Manor as a 22-inch rainbow flapped on his line.

Kozain and his family, including uncle John Fry of Irwin, a 34-year veteran of opening day, gather to their familiar hideaway for the annual event. Their ritual is rooted in three generations of uncles introducing their nephews to the unofficial holiday.

“We only live 8 miles apart, but this is the only time we see each other,” said John ‘Rocky’ Picciano of Jeannette, Fry's uncle, who first came to the creek with family as a 16-year-old. “This creek just brings us all back,” he smiled while slicing chunks of his homemade salami with a pocketknife as he passed it to his great-nephew Kozain.

For the Frys, it is a rite of passage for the nephews to sleep on dewy brush to reserve the fishing hole for the older uncles the next morning. Then, an angler’s wonderland awaits, of stocked deep pools, constant currents and wooded cover.

Next year, the men plan to bring a fourth-generation nephew. The same is true for Mike Patton’s now 2-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter.

“That’s why I do what I do -- to protect our families and liberties,” Patton said of his service. “It’s freedom to be with family in the outdoors.”

March 2015

My favorite photo of the month was created from an idea I saw while doing errands near the Greensburg post office one rainy day a few weeks earlier. Ever since, each moderately rainy day made me want to ace this idea which required one specific parking spot, enough rain, and a colorful umbrella. Some days, the parking spot was occupied; other days, there were no colorful umbrellas in sight. Taking part in the waiting game of photojournalism truly makes me appreciate others' work more. Oftentimes readers, including myself, glance too fast at images in the paper or on Twitter without realizing the patience, vision and alignment needed to achieve a piece of art. Since many of my assignments (especially sports) are read and react situations in shooting, exercising my patience over three hours, like with my umbrella photo, is a humbling experience for me.

February 2015

February made for a few jubilations and dejections as the WPIAL playoffs for winter sports moved through the brackets. But my favorite this month is the wrestler feature shown below.

Canon-McMillan High School hosts several big wrestling tournaments every winter, and with most, busts out a huge spotlight to showcase the "parade of champions" and their final bouts. The names are rattled off fairly quickly, causing me to race up and down the bleachers to experiment with different angles. With light this good and rare in high school gyms, it pays to play with trial and error. This angle above the red carpet, as I squeezed between hundreds of cheering parents, caught my eye as my favorite angle. Now all I had to do was wait for a boy to hold his head gear separated enough from the rest of his silhouette.

This is the start of my new year's resolution: maintaining my blog at least once a month. In college, I used to update my old Wordpress after every assignment--which was a bit overkill. And blogging less often forces me to edit, another skill I am striving to better .

Below are my favorite images from January, starting with, what I think, is my strongest photo of the month of a wrestler checked on a stretcher. Oftentimes, what I am encouraged to look for shows athletes at their toughest moment or highest jubilation. But sports cannot have a storytelling victor without showing the struggle: blood, tears, injuries. Photos like this are necessary to warn parents before enrolling their kids in contact sports. Unfortunately, a winning story can come at a painful price.

Cheerleading Championships

To be honest, I was loathing this assignment despite hiding it well. The glittery makeup, the pettiness, the pop music heartthrobs, the exclusivity-- it reminded me my own not-so-distant tomboy high school years of despising the stereotypical American teenage girl.

A dozen ink acronyms smeared my hand of squads to best represent our company's coverage areas: FR, PR, NH, SF, TJ, etc. After cross-referencing my needed teams with the routine calendar, I began to introduce myself through clouds of hairspray as they prepped for a long day filled with Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" on replay.

The more groups I mingled with, the more I sensed my misjudgment over the years. But it wasn't until all my work was submitted for print, web and Twitter that I felt the most wrong.

Girls from all over the region expressed their thanks for my willingness to document their most pinnacle "moment." One heart and kissy-face emoji lit up my phone after another.

They forever melted my heart.

2014 in Review

Without a doubt, I know this is the year I've matured the most both photographically and personally.

November marked my one year anniversary with Trib Total Media, my first staff photojournalism job in my hometown of Pittsburgh. Saying I have been blessed to be hired, especially on the Greensburg staff, would be an insulting understatement.

Not only was I trusted in my rookie year with big assignments-- the USS Somerset commissioning in Philadelphia, six state championship basketball games in Hershey, two days of state track in Shippensburg, September 11th service at the Flight 93 memorial, a school stabbing that gained national attention, most West Virginia football home games, the noted Penn State vs Ohio State football rivalry, and more-- but I felt overwhelming love from the four guys on staff.

Barry, Brian, Sean and Evan always extend their experience and eye when I need mentoring. And sometimes their liver when venting is necessary!

I look up to them as models I hope to grow into in a few years, just like a little sister in a family of older brothers should.

Another obvious highlight of my year was my acceptance into the prestigious Eddie Adams Workshop where I met true heroes of photojournalism and stupidly talented students from all over the world. Though I still feel like I am digesting every ounce of wisdom shared at this incomparable all-you-can-eat buffet of an educational experience, it was a rejuvenating gust of humbly appreciated inspiration.

Personally, my biggest accomplishment this year was knocking out a miraculous amount of debt: $36,576.39! This time last year when my husband's student loans kicked into repayment, I felt defeated by the realization of taking 10 years to pay off over $100,000 in loans and always financing cars. I simply chose not to live by Sallie Mae's repayment schedule, but to take control of my future by the throat. Our success of untangling a financial pile of s*** is owed to the discipline, trust and love Keven and I have for each other. I simply feel we love each other too much to be enslaved to debt for a decade. Yes, these next three years will not be glamorous since we choose to live at the poverty line with our remaining money, but we will have more fun with finances later if we handle it well now. Meanwhile, I am baking bread, learning to be content with my old clothes and enjoying the oftentimes overlooked details in life.

Thankfulness proved to be a constant theme of the year, and I hope to never lose humility throughout my entire life. A sincere "thank you" is due to everyone who has encouraged and prayed for me along the way. I am forever indebted to reciprocate your steadfast love.

Wishing all another year of growth, friendship and storytelling imagery,

-Steph

Karson Williams, 3, of Mamont watches hundreds of men, including her father Joe Williams and grandfather Bob Knabb, inspect 97 confiscated guns before bidding during a public auction at Westmoreland County Public Works in Greensburg on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014. The guns had been in the coroner’s office evidence locker for as long as 30 years. Some of the weapons are high-quality, some collectible and many were used in suicides, Coroner Ken Bacha said. State law requires the coroner’s office to sell off unclaimed property, including guns, at public auction. This sale is the first the county has had since Bacha’s father, Leo, was coroner in the 1980s.

Castration day on the farm

I'm sure the bulls were loathing this annual occasion. At least that's what I thought their breathy "moos" and snorts conveyed.

An assignment was given to me to photograph images related to farm injury. So I met Mr. Alquin Heinnickel, who has been raising cattle for 45 years, at his Hempfield farm. Uneasy around the camera, he quickly showed me his combine, silo unloader and grain dryer. Luckily I asked assertively if I could photograph him actually working instead of a 10 minute tour.

Though these images are somewhat unrelated to the original assignment, I thought it was a fun opportunity to be in a farmer's shoes for a day.

With the snow, mud, uncooperative cattle and long hours, my current high respect for farmers increased immensely. Our country is so fortunate to have these men and women in our communities.

Blanock celebrates one year anniversary of cancer diagnosis with first varsity start

It is hard to find teenagers in today's culture that don't only care about their image, the next notification blowing up their latest generation smart phone, their fleeting relationship status and other narcissistic traits that flood their worldview and drown any feelings of humility and unconditional love.

However, on Friday I found a whole gym full at Canon McMillan High School who disproved the usual stereotype of their generation.

They are decked out in blue and gold. They put their hands in with players during coach's timeout huddles. They howl when the hoop swishes.

They are the Canon Crazies.

But they give the school spirit because senior Luke Blanock gave it to them tenfold.

I've never seen a high school so motivated by one student's positive attitude. This kid constantly laughs in his diagnosis' face, smiling and high-fiving his friends inside the locker room and out.

Photographing many high school sporting events, I admit, strengthens my aforementioned prejudice of American teenagers. Though, with a strong defense, Luke is not only the epitome of a role model for his sport, school, and diagnosis, but he truly leads an entire generation as well.

I'm so thankful I met him and documented his remarkable comeback.

City of Greensburg Holiday Parade

Working the parade more than an hour before it began definitely paid off!

Photographers agree that parades can be one of the worst assignments. And I too was loathing it when I saw my name on the budget.

To handle the chaos with unclean backgrounds, Barry told me that the best parade photos are before or after the main event. The same can be true of most assignments.

When I first wondered Main Street, I was a bit too early as many floats weren't even half decorated for photos to make sense. Then, unforeseen 40 degree rain poured. It played quite a toll on my concentration since I was improperly dressed, but I worked hard to refocus especially since the paper wanted to run a large package tomorrow and in a special neighborhoods section. Double the work made, and I'm glad I spent double the time.

Here are a few of my favorites. Merry early Christmas!

Cold finds at football in Bedford County

I found myself shivering on another frosty sideline two nights in a row. Our sister paper, the Kittanning Leader Times, needed coverage of Karns City's first round of states which was held in a small town about an hour and a half away from me. It was fun going somewhere completely new but no 3G service was a headache. Adding to my frustration, the cold weather made my 400mm work incredibly slow. Like always, I try to push myself to find a handful of features. This time, the steamy breath and sweat from the players made an interesting element.

Cat Nap: West Virginia's bid for upset against No. 12 Kansas State falls short

My boss Barry and I covered an odd Thursday night WVU game, which concluded my coverage of regular season WVU for the year. I chose to shoot in front of the Wildcats during the numbing and windy game. Though I was in front of the winning team, there were few visual plays. It was quite frustrating. Both teams looked slightly frozen, especially WVU whose fans mostly left after the first half. What a disappointing way to end my first year of West Virginia football.

Hundreds bid on confiscated guns

A few weeks ago, we did a story about a rare gun auction held by the county to clean out their evidence locker of 30 years. What weirded me out was that these guns obviously have killed people or else they wouldn't have been in the coroner's office. I guess that is what guns do, but it still fascinated me that bidders could easily look past the suicides and homicides. All the officers I spoke with felt the same gross tingling, but attendees didn't see old dried blood in the barrels. They saw collector's items.

Below is my favorite photo of the jam-packed warehouse that showed off the weapons. Karson was the only pink in the room, and I think her expression echoes my same unsettled feeling.

Weekend Football Loses

Friday and Saturday's games were somewhat identical: two tight games through the first half but no victor for me to possibly shoot in the championships.

Since I cover sports mostly in Westmoreland County, I was secretly rooting for Penn-Trafford Friday to defeat favored Pittsburgh Central Catholic whose roster boasts NFL blood including the sons of Hall-of-Famer Lynn Swann and former Pro Bowl quarterback Gus Frerotte.

I also was inwardly cheering for Blairsville to make it to the District 6 Championships on Saturday, but the outcome differed.

With that said, I completed my first season of football coverage for Trib Total Media since my hiring last year which brought me right into basketball season.

There were so many tips and tactics I learned, tried, failed and succeeded while shooting this poorly-lit, rush heavy and sometimes frustrating sport. I think I've made some progress this season, but I am always excited for fall Friday night lights to return again in 2015!

Happy Veterans Day

Sometimes when I tell veterans the usual "thank you for your service," it never seems adequate. Their level of bravery, selflessness and desire to serve astonishes me.
